IDS is a laboratory automation manufacturer specializing in the design, development, and production of scalable automation systems for modern diagnostic laboratories.
Through our vertically integrated engineering and manufacturing capabilities, we work closely with customers and global IVD partners to deliver high-performance automation solutions tailored to their operational needs. Our systems are designed with future laboratory demands in mind, ensuring long-term reliability and flexibility.
The beginning of IDS dates back to 1957, when Chairman Teruaki Itoh established an electrical engineering company focused on building custom machinery and maintenance solutions grounded in hands-on manufacturing expertise. Through the 1970s, the company expanded its industrial engineering capabilities and gained extensive experience as a subcontractor for leading Japanese medical electronics companies.

Subsequent exposure to laboratory practices overseas further shaped Itoh’s vision, strengthening his belief that automation should be made possible to protect people, not replace them.
A pivotal turning point came in the mid-1970s, when Itoh was entrusted with maintenance support contract for AutoChemist®, an advanced automated biochemical analyzer introduced in Japan through a major healthcare conglomerate. This engagement marked Itoh’s first deep involvement in clinical laboratory environments and exposed the realities of safety, efficiency, and human burden in diagnostic testing.
This conviction led IDS to pursue original product development, culminating in the mid-1980s with the creation of automated sample sorting, dispensing technologies.
These early innovations laid the foundation for IDS’s collaboration with Shimane Medical University and marked the beginning of its journey as a pioneer in clinical laboratory automation.
Sustainability is a fundamental part of our corporate philosophy and long-term strategy as a Japanese manufacturer.
We design our operations with a deep sense of responsibility toward our environment and resources.
Solar energy plays a key role in supporting our daily production operations. This reduces our reliance on conventional power sources, helping to lower overall carbon emissions.
Our sustainability efforts are further strengthened by our vertical, in-house manufacturing model with a circular manufacturing mindset. From metal sheet fabrication, surface painting, electrical wiring, to final module assembly, every major production process is performed within our own facility. This integrated approach allows us to minimize waste, optimize material usage, and maintain strict quality control at every stage.
By controlling nearly all components internally, we directly lower the carbon footprint typically associated with multi-supplier manufacturing chains.
We are dedicated to providing tailored automation systems that integrate seamlessly into laboratory workflows, empowering healthcare professionals to deliver timely, precise diagnoses and treatments.
By advancing automation technology, we strive to enhance the quality of healthcare delivery and contribute to better patient outcomes.
By delivering future-ready automation solutions, we aim to bridge global healthcare access and enhance diagnostic efficiency.
IDS is headquartered in Kumamoto, Japan, and has an automated production facility in Kikuyo, Japan. Our physical offices are spread across major cities in Japan, with Project Coordinators based in the US, Europe and Asia.
Since launching our first automation solution in 1988, we have been transforming laboratories worldwide. With more than 3,000 systems delivered, our solutions are now integral to the daily operations of leading medical institutions.
Our manufacturing operations are built on intelligent, automated processes that combine precision engineering, in-process quality control, and data-driven production workflows. This enables us to deliver consistently high-quality systems with predictable lead times, while retaining the flexibility to support both standardized solutions and highly customized solutions.
This manufacturing intelligence gives our partners the confidence to innovate. Knowing that their systems are engineered for reliable performance today and scalable growth in the future.
